Our Summer Bucket and Spade List

Summer bucket and spade list

I love the idea of a Bucket List. I’m a list-maker by nature, and I like to be organised. Summer holidays go very quickly, and I often find myself on 1st September wishing that I’d done more, made more, or been to certain places I didn’t get around to.

A bucket list, though, is traditionally a list of things you want to do before you ‘kick the bucket’, which in itself is a little morbid, especially when you’re planning these things with your kids! With this in mind, we’re calling this our ‘bucket and spade’ list, and we want to fill our buckets with lots of fun things this summer.

Top 30 Summer Fun Activities

We’re spending a lot of time in France, where we often come. It will be a busy time with gite guests and family visitors, so we want to make sure we make the most of it. We’ve each made a list, and we hope to combine them to do some fantastic things this summer (and keep the kids off the Xbox for a while if we possibly can!).

Mum’s List:

  • Visit French Markets and Brocantes/Vide Grenier
  • A trip to the Marais Poitevin
  • Visit the coast (La Rochelle area)
  • Do a Cognac distillery tour
  • Take the children to a theme park – Puy du Fou, Futuroscope or similar
  • Take some photos of sunflowers (I haven’t taken any so far in all the time I’ve been coming here – unbelievable!)
  • Do some crafts and have quiet times with the boys
  • Have dinners outdoors
  • Do some star gazing with the boys (Hugo bought a telescope from a Vide Grenier and we have the perfect skies here to use it)
  • Have a lakeside picnic

    Visit a Cognac distillery tour

Dad’s List:

  • Go canoeing on the Charentes river
  • Make our garden nicer
  • Have some family picnics
  • Visit French Markets eg Lezay
  • Visit a night market eg Villefagnan

    Canoeing Charentes bucket list
    Canoeing on Charentes River

Hugo’s List:

  • Go to a theme park eg Futuroscope
  • Do some crafts
  • Make some videos for YouTube
  • Have a family picnic
  • Play on the new inflatables in the pool
  • Go on a jet ski
  • Try quad biking
  • Visit the seaside
  • Read the whole of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Go to Lezay Market and the ‘dog charity’ place

    Futuroscope bucket list
A trip to Futuroscope theme park

Toby’s List:

  • Canoeing/Kayaking
  • Go to Zoodyssey (we’ve been before but Toby loves it, especially the foxes and racoons, and holding the snakes)
  • Pool activities and games
  • Go to a restaurant
  • Make a vlog video

    Playing pool games bucket list

It’s good to see that there are many overlaps in our wish lists, so we will therefore all be happy, hopefully at least some of the time!

We are also really looking forward to the Mad Hatter’s Wonderland Festival, at the Mad Hatters Kitchen, a restaurant venue near our house in France. This 3-day music festival is going to be amazing, and we are therefore planning to really make the most of it this year!

We hope you like our ideas for our bucket list. Whether visiting France or not, we hope you can take some inspiration from our list too. What’s at the top of your bucket list (or bucket and spade list) this summer?

  1. Love the idea of a “bucket and spade” list as opposed to a bucket list – which as you say, always makes me cringe a bit when I say it. I think it’s such a great idea for everyone to write their own so that you can see where they overlap and enjoy doing those things as your priority. Hope you have a lovely summer x

  3. Love this – great idea and how nice that you all mention a few of the activities. Have always wanted to go to Futuroscope theme park so if you go – would love to find out what it’s like!

    1. Sorry for the late reply – just found your comment in the spam box for some reason!Hubby thinks a theme park will kill me (he’s probably right!), but the feedback we’ve had so far is that it’s more for older children, and that the majority of the ‘rides’ are actually just 3D special effects type things. Not quite as good as Disney! I’d still like to go though, I think my kids are about the right age for it. I’ll let you know if we do!

  4. Enjoy every minute!

  5. I love the sound of your bucket and spade list! And I like that everyone got to include what they’d like to do!! My personal favourites were visiting the French markets (and a night market!) as French markets are so awesome, the distillery tour, and reading the whole of Order of The Phoenix!! Doing those would make a good summer for me! Goblet of Fire is my personal favourite Harry Potter book, but they’re all awesome! We’ve actually already achieved a lot this summer-we had a fabulous holiday in Wales, another brilliant trip to Padstow, and we’ve booked to back there again soon. The last 3 years we’ve battled with very babies who need to nap/feed frequently, won’t sleep away from home etc, so all we wanted to do was to be able to go away, and not cry with stress while we were there! This year we’ve finally achieved that, so now we can start working on a proper bucket and spade list!! I hope you have a magical summer, ticking off all of your wishes!

Aw, thank you for your lovely comments. I’m glad you’ve finally had a peaceful getaway too – tiny steps! We’ve ticked off the market, restaurant and swimming pool games already, so must be doing ok!

  6. What a lovely idea – having some goals for the holidays. I wonder how many you will manage to achieve? Perhaps a summary post at the end of the holidays? I’d love to know. It’s got me thinking about what our family goals would be this summer. Hmmm… #SharingTheBlogLove

  8. I absolutely love that Hugo has included to read Harry Potter in his listen and also how Toby wants to make a vlog. It really does represent youth, it’s so refreshing make their own lists. I’d also love to visit a French market and do nothing but eat cheese and bread whilst browsing. Lovely little idea you’ve posted. #bestandworst

  11. What a lovely list – and how lovely that there are so many overlaps between the lists, makes choosing what to prioritise that bit easier! I love a mooch around a market and I remember having great fun canoeing in France as a child. I’d love to know how many you manage to achieve! Thanks so much for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

  14. ooh I love a list too! This is such a good idea, I have a feeling I am going to get to the end of the summer and regret not doing things. Alice starts school in September and I really want to make the most of this summer. Typically she got chicken pox on the first day of the holidays, but she is nearly over it and I want to get us out and about. This has inspired me to get planning. Love this! The Kids idea of fun is always “make videos for YouTube.” Ha! I can’t wait till mine are older and we can go to France. They are only 3 and 1 and I can’t sit on a car with them for too long without wanting to jump out! Great ideas! #KCACOLS
