Three of the people I love most in the world were in Manchester today, for the Michael Carrick testimonial game at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s ground. My Dad has been a long-standing Man Utd fan, and my youngest son has followed in his footsteps, so for Dad’s 70th birthday and Toby’s 9th, we got tickets to the game. Paul acted as chauffeur and will also enjoy seeing so many well-known footballers together in one place.
Then terrorism happened. First Manchester, then last night London was attacked again. Of course they still went, but an opportunity of a lifetime was slightly tinged with an air of extra caution, and a touch of fear. How sad to hear my 9-year-old telling his friends he was looking forward to his trip, but not to the chance of a bomb going off.
They went, and they had a fantastic time. We will not be beaten.
Stay strong Manchester. Stay strong London. Love one another, hold your loved ones closer, pray for peace.
