Kicking Off The Summer Bucket List

Buckets have many uses on a road trip!

Last year we developed a ‘Bucket and Spade’ list for our summer activities. Since a bucket list is meant to be things to do before you ‘kick the bucket’, we thought bucket and spade list was a bit less morbid!! Anyway, here we are in France already, having been taken by surprise by the earlier school holidays in Scotland, and finding ourselves somewhat disorganised in comparison to last year! So we’re quickly pulling together a summer bucket and spade list to make sure we all get to do something we want to this summer.

Hugo’s List

  • Buy some intriguing items from a car boot sale
  • Be resistant to being annoyed by Toby (oh I hope he manages this one!)
  • Go bike riding at least once a week
  • Make the house be more settled (?)
  • Make a lot of money from doing jobs (!)
Regular bike rides are on Hugo's bucket list

Toby’s List

  • Go to the World of Crocodiles (Planet of Crocodiles)
  • Have a Chinese Buffet
  • Go on a trip to a beach (any beach)
  • Night Swimming
  • Go to La Vallee Des Singes (Valley of the Monkeys)

    Crocodile smile
    Crocodile mouth open

Mum’s List

  • Read some books
  • Make something delicious out of all these plums!
  • Stop the kids fighting!
  • Find the best ice cream
  • Visit a Chateau

Chateau visit is on Mum's Bucket List
    Chateau Des Enigmes

Dad’s List

This summer might be my bucket list! It has been really hard work already, especially in the garden where we had a massive tree fall in a storm which has taken some considerable clearing. My bucket list is, therefore:

  • Get the garden sorted and looking nice again
  • Drink some nice wine
  • Enjoy the Mad Hatters Music Festival
  • Chill out!

It seems our requests are quite simple this year, which is perhaps a reflection of our need to slow down and chill out after a busy year of moving house and settling into a new place. There has been some hard work here already, and probably more to come. Thank goodness the in-laws are here and have been a fantastic help so far. I’ll be sorry to see them go tomorrow.

Check back with us to see how we get on at the end of the summer (if I’m still here!!)…

  3. Very nice concept. Creating a separate list for each family member is so much fun. Let’s kick the bucket now…haha 🙂

It is fun, and also makes sure everyone gets a say, so fewer arguments (hopefully!)

Oh, I love this idea! We have 2 more weeks in school but after that we will definitely do this with the boys! How do you ensure they don’t put unrealistic expectations there?

    1. Familymakes says: Reply

I guess you can set limits for the boys – say, only one outing per week, or maybe a price limit? Mine just naturally seemed to keep it quite realistic, not sure why!

  5. Stop the kids fighting! Can it be done though?

Oh I wish! Stopping it for one day would be a bonus!!

  6. I love that you all have your own little lists! Hope that you get to do them all. The crocodile world sounds amazing! I think that would be on my list too! x

  7. A great list !! I love that everyone has had there own say and choices xx We are like you in need of a bit of a chilled summer. Enjoy xxx

  10. […] Summer seems to be an ideal time to catch up on reading, especially on holiday when you have a little more time. I hardly ever read, which is shameful. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it, just that there always seems to be something else to be done first. So this summer, I was determined to catch up with some reading. I even put it on my bucket list!
